Info
Timber Timbre stop you. The elements are deceptively simple: a confident, but hushed voice, understated guitar, strings and keyboard flourishes, and a subtle percussive beat. Timber Timbre, led by guitarist/vocalist Taylor Kirk, is haunted by the history of pop music.
Timber Timbre have gained a devoted following with their spellbinding performances at unusual venues around Toronto and more recently supporting Owen Pallett across Canada and his first ever U.S. tour. The years have also marked a rapid progression from dusty, low-fi bedroom blues to the sophisticated, cinematic studio work, and the formation of the band as a true three-piece, with Kirk joined by Mika Posen on violin and Simon Trottier on lap-steel, auto-harp and synth.
New album ‘Creep On Creepin’ On’ – the follow up to their Polaris-Music-Prize-long-listed debut ‘Timber Timbre’ – was produced by Timber Timbre and engineered by Kees Dekker at The Treatment Room in their native Montreal and inside a converted church studio with Grammy nominee Mark Lawson.
Kirk began the writing of the record two years previous. The album also includes appearances by acclaimed pianist Mathieu Charbonneau and saxophonist Colin Stetson, both of whom Kirk credits with elevating the calibre of the album’s arrangements as well as its overall sound.
And while settings and collaborators continue to change for the band, the guiding inspiration behind the songs has not.
“The idea is to make music we love and therefore embrace the risk of sounding like all the music we’ve ever loved, all at once,” Kirk explains.
‘Creep On Creepin’ On’ marks a significant musical move forward from the band’s debut. From guttural groans on lead track “Bad Ritual” to the eeriedoo-wop-inspired pleas of “Lonesome Hunter”, the album is textured and commanding, stirring proof of the unwavering powers of obsession and possession.
