Info

Jinja Safari is two equal halves, made up of harmonising frontmen & multi-instrumentalists Marcus Azon and Pepa Knight. Marcus grew up in Tasmania, the son of a preacher-man. The son of an artist, Pepa hails from the central coast of New South Wales. Only a few months old, Jinja Safari are set to release their much anticipated self-titled EP.

In early 2010, the rhythm and play of their personalities was revealed following a chance meeting by a campfire. Sharing the same adventurous instincts, their imaginations soared over the Indian Ocean and settled in the East-African town of Jinja – a place of strong musical and family ties for the group. Jinja Safari draws from Afropop rhythms and tumbling island-guitars, woven with transcendent landscapes of melodic layering. Coupled with arching harmonies & sly word-play, the boys reaffirm the age-old truth: music that most brings humans together is ‘dancing-music’, organic & alive.

Lyrically, Jinja Safari perfectly captures the space between half-held childhood memories of hide & seek, grasping onto a fleeting youth, scurrying through the forest, discovering young love and breeching adulthood. The live band is pulled together as a 5-piece of unapologetic & bouncy showmanship. Using a carnival of multiple percussionists and bringing an energy that is akin to the overarching joy of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, the east/west blend of Graceland-era Paul Simon, and the intimate, fiery indie scamper of Efterklang.

Jinja Safari’s first live show was held in May 2010 in a secret coastal forest for family and friends, followed by their first public show supporting Miami Horror and Last Dinosaurs. Since then, they have supported the likes of Cloud Control, Custom Kings, and are embarking on a tour with Art vs Science in August.

In early June, Jinja Safari were selected by Triple J Unearthed to open Splendour In The Grass 2010 joining the likes of The Pixies, Grizzly Bear, Temper Trap, Florence & The Machine and many more. Their first single ‘Peter Pan’ was then added to high rotation on Triple J. Second single ‘Forest Eyes’ is set for radio and video release in mid-August.

“[Peter Pan] really works on a lot of levels. Clever arrangement, great dynamic, strong voices. It’s a winner of a track.” – RICHARD KINGSMILL, TRIPLE J

“Their unique brand of sitar-wielding, smile-inducing, ‘forest rock’ was so happy that it hurt. This might sound hyped/dramatic but it seems that this band is poised to take over the world, one dynamic and engaging performance at a time.” - FASTERLOUDER
